Ken Livingstone rallies for a ‘fare deal’

Ken Livingstone has announced details of his ‘Fare Deal’ Rally which will bring together Londoners who are campaigning for fairer fares.

The rally will be held on Wednesday 23rd November at the Camden Centre, Bidborough St, WC1H 9AU and feature individuals and organisations from across London alongside leading national politicians.

Ken has confirmed leading campaigner, Tom Watson MP will address the rally. Other speakers will include Val Shawcross AM, Tessa Jowell MP, Len McCluskey (Unite, General Secretary).

Londoners can sign up to attend the rally and find more information about Ken’s campaign for fairer fares at http://www.kenlivingstone.com/faredealrally

Ken Livingstone said “I’m inviting Londoners from all corners of the capital to join our campaign for fairer fares and come along to my Fare Deal rally on the 23rd November. Wherever I go in London from Barking to Barnet I meet people who are being squeezed by the rising cost of bus, train, tram and tube fares. Our Fare Deal rally will be a great opportunity for hundreds of Londoners who believe it’s time for a different approach to the Conservative Mayor’s year on year fare rises to come together and set out a fairer alternative.

Rather than fare increases I believe it is time to cut the cost of travel. I’ve set out a clearly costed plan which would replace the above inflation fare increases with a 5% fares cut.”

Ken’s Fare Rally is the latest in with a series of major campaign events and initiatives which are bringing together hundreds of thousands of Londoners. Last week hundreds of volunteers hit London’s public transport system talking to commuters about the campaign for fairer fares.

Over 100,000 Londoners were directly contacted by text and email about Ken’s ‘Fare Deal’ and thousands viewed a new youtube video on fares here.

Fireworks displays in London

If you cannot make it to the Lambeth fireworks display there are a number of other London Borough fireworks displays taking place across London.

Stay safe on bonfire night

If you are holding your own celebrations stay safe and follow the fireworks code:

  • Only buy fireworks marked with the British Standard Kitemark BS7114.
  • Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks.
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box and always follow the instructions carefully when using them.
  • Light them at arms length using a taper and stand well back.
  • Never go back to them once they are lit. Even if a firework hasn’t gone off, it could still explode.
  • Never throw fireworks or put them in your pocket.
  • Respect your neighbours – don’t let off fireworks late at night and remember there are laws to follow about how late you can set fireworks off.
  • Take care with sparklers – never give them to children under five. Even when they have gone out they are still hot so put them in a bucket of water after use.
  • Keep your pets indoors throughout the evening.

Thornton residents have been well served by London Assembly Member, Val Shawcross

Thornton residents have been well served by their London assembly member Val Shawcross and councillors are urging them to back her for a new term in May’s elections.

Val has played an active part in the ward helping to lobby for a new bus route for Thornton and supporting local events and groups from the Weir Estate fun day to the new Clapham Park Estate tenants and residents association.

Now local councillors are urging residents to support Val in her bid for re-election as London assembly member for Lambeth and Southwark and as deputy mayor.

Cllr Ed Davie said: ‘Val has been a great supporter of the people of Thornton ward and I hope everyone will now return the favour and get behind her bid for re-election.

‘I know she would make as good a deputy mayor as she has our local representative and we as local councillors will be doing our best to get her and all Labour candidates elected.

‘By raising public transport fares by 55% in his four years in office and cutting police numbers by hundreds Boris Johnson has shown how out of touch he is with ordinary Londoners. That’s why we need a Labour mayor and assembly who would cut public transport by 5% in the first year and restore police numbers to restore order to our streets.’
