Ken Livingstone has announced details of his ‘Fare Deal’ Rally which will bring together Londoners who are campaigning for fairer fares.

The rally will be held on Wednesday 23rd November at the Camden Centre, Bidborough St, WC1H 9AU and feature individuals and organisations from across London alongside leading national politicians.

Ken has confirmed leading campaigner, Tom Watson MP will address the rally. Other speakers will include Val Shawcross AM, Tessa Jowell MP, Len McCluskey (Unite, General Secretary).

Londoners can sign up to attend the rally and find more information about Ken’s campaign for fairer fares at http://www.kenlivingstone.com/faredealrally

Ken Livingstone said “I’m inviting Londoners from all corners of the capital to join our campaign for fairer fares and come along to my Fare Deal rally on the 23rd November. Wherever I go in London from Barking to Barnet I meet people who are being squeezed by the rising cost of bus, train, tram and tube fares. Our Fare Deal rally will be a great opportunity for hundreds of Londoners who believe it’s time for a different approach to the Conservative Mayor’s year on year fare rises to come together and set out a fairer alternative.

Rather than fare increases I believe it is time to cut the cost of travel. I’ve set out a clearly costed plan which would replace the above inflation fare increases with a 5% fares cut.”

Ken’s Fare Rally is the latest in with a series of major campaign events and initiatives which are bringing together hundreds of thousands of Londoners. Last week hundreds of volunteers hit London’s public transport system talking to commuters about the campaign for fairer fares.

Over 100,000 Londoners were directly contacted by text and email about Ken’s ‘Fare Deal’ and thousands viewed a new youtube video on fares here.

To celebrate 200 years of Brockwell Hall, the fireworks will be set to music from the last 200 years and a funfair and stalls, food and mulled wine will be available from 4pm.

To make sure that everyone enjoys a safe and enjoyable display, no sparklers, fireworks for personal use or Chinese lanterns will be allowed into the park.

Timetable

4pm Event opens

4.15pm Main arena entertainment, funfair and stalls

8pm Fireworks display

8.30pm Main arena entertainment, funfair and stalls.

Fireworks displays in London

If you cannot make it to the Lambeth fireworks display there are a number of other London Borough fireworks displays taking place across London.

Stay safe on bonfire night

If you are holding your own celebrations stay safe and follow the fireworks code:

Only buy fireworks marked with the British Standard Kitemark BS7114.

Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks.

Keep fireworks in a closed box and always follow the instructions carefully when using them.

Light them at arms length using a taper and stand well back.

Never go back to them once they are lit. Even if a firework hasn’t gone off, it could still explode.

Never throw fireworks or put them in your pocket.

Respect your neighbours – don’t let off fireworks late at night and remember there are laws to follow about how late you can set fireworks off.

Take care with sparklers – never give them to children under five. Even when they have gone out they are still hot so put them in a bucket of water after use.

Keep your pets indoors throughout the evening.

Val has played an active part in the ward helping to lobby for a new bus route for Thornton and supporting local events and groups from the Weir Estate fun day to the new Clapham Park Estate tenants and residents association.

Now local councillors are urging residents to support Val in her bid for re-election as London assembly member for Lambeth and Southwark and as deputy mayor.

Cllr Ed Davie said: ‘Val has been a great supporter of the people of Thornton ward and I hope everyone will now return the favour and get behind her bid for re-election.

‘I know she would make as good a deputy mayor as she has our local representative and we as local councillors will be doing our best to get her and all Labour candidates elected.

‘By raising public transport fares by 55% in his four years in office and cutting police numbers by hundreds Boris Johnson has shown how out of touch he is with ordinary Londoners. That’s why we need a Labour mayor and assembly who would cut public transport by 5% in the first year and restore police numbers to restore order to our streets.’

You can register to help the campaign by contacting us or signing up with http://www.yourken.org

In response Labour’s candidate Ken Livingstone said: ‘People are being squeezed by spiralling fares. It’s hurting them but it’s not fair and not necessary. If elected I will cut fares by 5% in October 2012. There will be no fares rise in 2013. After that, fares will rise by no more than inflation. Thousands of Londoners will be better off as a result.

Thornton councillor Ed Davie said: ‘Boris Johnson is taxing the poor and squeezed middle with huge rises in bus and Tube fares whilst arguing that the top rate of tax for those earning more than £150,000 a year should be cut. The Tories are bad for ordinary Londoners and we should get rid of him in May.

‘I have met constituents in Thornton who are struggling to find the fare to get the bus to work – it can’t be right that we are being taxed off our transport system by Tories who want more money for the richest.’

Due to the Tory led Coalition’s housing benefit changes, Labour led Lambeth council is preparing itself for a rise in homelessness. We are preparing to combat this by forming the capital’s first ever Tenancy Rescue Service aimed at rescuing vulnerable people under the age of 35 who will be most at risk of sleeping rough once the governments harmful reforms have been implemented.

Tens of thousands more across the capital are expected to suffer as a result of the Tory led changes which will see those under the age of 35 have their benefits reduced to a shared room rate of £85 pounds regardless of how much the rent actually costs. It is estimated that 548 young people in the borough and thousands more across the capital will loose their homes unless we intervene.

Lambeth’s new Tenancy Rescue Service will ensure that any individuals or families threatened with homelessness are offered support to reschedule rental terms with landlords, maximise income in some way, or change their living arrangements.

Labour in Lambeth is taking decisive action now and will not sit back and watch our most vulnerable residents return to rough sleeping. The people who need housing benefit the most will be among the hardest hit by these reforms.

The majority of housing benefit claimants will be affected in some way. At a time when families are dealing with increased costs of bills, food and fuel, these Tory led changes will push many into very difficult financial circumstances.

Thornton’s councillors have urged residents to sign up to Ken Livingstone’s campaign to replace Boris Johnson as London Mayor.

Using a new interactive website the Labour campaign aims to give Londoners the power to help forge policies and opportunities to help in flexible ways.

Councillor Ed Davie said: ‘Boris Johnson has presided over huge rises in bus fares whilst cutting hundreds of police from our streets with the result that Londoners are poorer, less mobile and less safe.

‘We need a mayor who will stand up for ordinary Londoners not just City bankers and his friends in Government.’

Lambeth and Southwark’s London Assembly Member Val Shawcross, who regularly visits and campaigns for Thornton, is Ken’s running mate and has vowed to ensure our area is given a high priority.
